In which Blake suffers a nasty bit of the stomach flu…

Wednesday morning began with me retching off the porch.  Lovely way to greet the day.  And yes, if I am close enough to the porch I vomit off it…I live in the country, it’s just natural that bodily fluids go out in the yard.

Quite a horrible day.  It has now put me behind schedule with the pictures from CWA this past Saturday, and as I have to work the rest of the weekend, it will be Monday or so before the pictures are up.

I spent most of the day on my back – alternating glasses of water and Mountain Dew.  Which of course, was sprayed over the grass later.

At 5pm, I went to bed for the night.  I did manage to watch “Pushing Daisies” in bed (the most original show on TV currently).  The rest of the night was filled with me waking every hour, turning to another side, having a sip of water and going back to sleep.  For hours I contemplated life and death.  I kept thinking of the characters in “Daisies.”  The facts are these: for the longest time I couldn’t remember the main character’s name (it’s Ned)…sip of water…roll over…what is the true nature of the half-death of the people in this show…roll over…at one point I had to force myself to think of something else.

I have had Thanksgiving with the family.  Time for my thanks:  To all of my friends/family/fans.  I’m thankful that I have a good job, and that I am allowed to go off on these wrestling trips whenever I ask to.  I’m thankful for my guard cat, my trust fund, my somewhat good health, my really good camera.  I’m thankful that so many people like my pics enough to use them.  Special mentions to: The Russells, The Jacksons, Thomas, ER, Kirby & TJ.

    classic rspdn…

    “disappointed”

    “difficult”

    “Flickr sucks”

Ok, I get it.  After consideration and many emails/comments from my site visitors (a sampling of comments above), we have decided to return to our “classic” photo display.

Everyone just bear with me, as it takes a little longer.  This weekend I had close to 600 photos and am currently in the culling out phase of the photos.  What are the phases you ask?

    1-Upload photos to my computer.

    2-Correct perspective.  Basically uprighting photos.

3- Culling out.  Deleting photos that will not be used or are just bad shots.

4- Modifications & tagging.  Mods of the photos, such as making it lighter and then slapping my copyright on them.

5- Upload to the site…and the world!

In which Blake reviews CWA from 11/17…

    My review from www.rikkiregal.com

    “All or Nothing II”
    At the York Rec Center.

There was no standing ovation from the crowd this time for Steve Corino. Other than the few people that I informed that this was indeed Corino’s last match in SC, no one knew. However, the fans were standing…in visible rage as Steve ran down their town, their spelling ability (Kirby TJ Nuber One!) and their family heritages. Memorable stuff!

    Quick results:
    Referee: Charles Richardson

    1. Ultra J Champion Stoney Hooker won a three way against Michael Frehley and Caleb Konley in a non-title bout.

    2. Mr Wrestling 3 & Shark Girl defeated Alllison Danger & Ares. Special guest referee Becky Bayless. Great tag match. Ares choked MW3 with an continuous suppply of neckties while Becky wasn’t looking, as the confiscation pile grew, Danger kept pullling more and more out of her camouflage two piece.

    3. Champion Charlie Dreamer successfully defended his title against the current Zero-1 Max US Champion Ricky Landell. Good match for the CWA champ, who won with a flying high cross body.

    4. Steve Corino defeated Derek Ryze. The up and coming Ryze had one of his best showings to date against Corino. An even trade between the two with Corino scoring a pinfall after a decapitating guillotine lariat.

    5. Main Event: TLC – The Elite Icons (Jake Manning & Joey Silvia) with Ty Dillinger defeated Team Macktion (Kirby & TJ Mack) to win the Tag Team titles. Team Macktion has dominated the tag division in CWA since early 2007 (March I believe?), and the last few months they have been chased by the Elite Icons, and the diminutive Dillinger. Manning informed the crowd that TLC would mean “takedowns, leg-locks and chin-locks” as he and Silvia would have nothing to do with hardcore. They both put folding chairs in the ring and settled in when TMs theme began. TM took the non-traditional route into the ring by delvering a double salvo of flying drop-kicks to the back of the Icons. This began a wild brawl all over the Rec Center. All three of the match elements were used by both teams, resulting in broken chairs and a warped ladder. Walking ringside this truly looked more like a street-fight than a sporting event as the crowd surged closer and closer to witness the warfare. No man walked away uninjured, as even Dillinger was set up in a surfboard for the “terminator of tag-teams”; the “Death From Above.” In the end, though Manning was able to climb to the top and grab both belts. Kudos to both teams!

Tonight capped off a great weekend for CWA and independent wrestling. Fans in both towns were witness to great matches and pro-wrestling history.

In which Blake reviews CWA from 11/16…

    My review from www.rikkiregal.com

At the Grace Park Rec Center, Statesville NC.

The wrestlers and fans in attendance witnessed history tonight. “Ricky Landell and I will never team again” came through the p.a. system. These words were uttered by Steve Corino, former NWA, ECW, and AWA World’s Heavyweight Champion. The thirteen year veteran announced earlier this year that he was retiring at the end of 2007. With CW Anderson retiring weeks ago, the “Extreme Horsemen” faced an uncertain future. Tonight though, the “Horsemen” went out in style against Team Macktion in the main event.

Quick results from the card: (Referees: Katie Kincaid, Red Jones)

    1. Mr Wrestling 3 defeated Caleb Konley via pinfall with a german suplex. This was Mr Wrestling 3’s debut in the main-land United States, he came to the ring wearing his half of the tag team belts from AWA’s Hawaii promotion HCW. MW3 won this with Mr Wrestling 2 on October 13 in Wahiawa, Hawaii. Impressive showing from MW3.

    2. Allison Danger rolled up Daffney by her tights for a small package win. One of the better ladies matches I have seen on the indy circuit. Special referee was ROHs Becky Bayless.

    3. The Elite Icons (Jake Manning & Joey Silvia) with manager Ty Dillinger beat Derek Ryze and Ares. The Icons and Dillinger are truly hated in CWA. Ryze teamed quite well with Ares, and the crowd put a lot of support in them, even though just a month ago they were hissing for Ryze’s demise at the hands of Stoney Hooker.

    4. “El Fuego” Jesse Ortega won by disqualification against CWA Champion Charlie Dreamer. Ortega was accompanied to the ring by his CWF tag team champion partner, Gemini Kid. The disqualification came about as Gemini slid a pair of handcuffs into the ring for Ortega. Gemini began to distract the ref, Dreamer got the cuffs and was caught by the quickly twirled ref (by Gemini) and DQ’d. Allison Danger came to ringside to side with Ortega and Gemini. This started an attack on Dreamer that ended with the Statesville Police dragging Ortega out of the building in handcuffs.

    5. Team Macktion (Kirby & TJ Mack) won with the “Death From Above” against the Extreme Horsemen (Steve Corino & Ricky Landell). Great match. Began with respect shown on both sides, but that ended when Corino took a cheap shot on Kirby. Buy the DVD when this comes out to see this. At the end, Kirby got on the p.a. and thanked Steve for his time in wrestling, his training assistance and for putting on great shows for the fans. Corino in true gentleman fashion thanked the fans and praised CWA for given real wrestling to them. The backstage emptied as Corino gave his curtain call.

Not only was this the last time the Horsemen teamed up, but this also marks Corino’s last apperance in North Carolina. Later today, Corino will make his final appearance in South Carolina – in York at the York Rec Center.

In which Blake recalls the Green Fairy…

    From Reveries Magazine, 11/16/07:

    the green fairy

With names like Lucid and Kubler, the once-banned favorite-beverage of van Gogh and Toulouse-Latrec is back on the market in America, reports Edward Rothstein in The New York Times (11/15/07). We are talking, of course, about absinthe … also known as “the green fairy, the green goddess, the green muse, the glaucous witch, the queen of poisons.” Absinthe, a “high-proof herbal liquor” has been illegal in the United States “for more than 95 years.” The ban was lifted after lawyers agreed that “the regulated chemical thujone, found in wormwood and once thought to have been the cause of absinthe’s lure and its dangers did not show up in any significant quantities in analyses of historical absinthe.”

And so, absinthe, with its “reputation as an intoxicating source of creativity and invention” is once again available in America, albeit without its legendary “pearly green” hue. It does retain its “flavors of anise, fennel, coriander, mint and other herbs” as well as its “special place in the history of modern culture.” van Gogh not only drank absinthe, he painted it, “and once threw a glass of it at Gaugin.” Cool. Manet, Degas and Picasso all “painted absinthe drinkers.” Toulouse-Latrec “had a special cane made that hid a glass.”

Absinthe figured into “Hemingway’s character Robert Jordan, in ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’,” who kept the “opaque, bitter, tongue-numbing, brain-warming, idea-changing liquid alchemy” at the ready. Its ban in both Europe and America resulted from murders and other mayhem allegedly committed by absinthe drinkers, and medical studies alleging symptoms including “sudden delirium, epileptic attacks, vertigo, hallucinatory delirium.” Apparently there’s now general agreement that such problems were more likely caused by alcoholism or madness than absinthe by itself. Edward Rothstein describes its effects simply as “a kind of relaxed alertness, accompanying the lulling impact of alcohol.” As well as perhaps a bit of bohemian legend … and a lot of marketing.

A friend and I once obtained a bottle of Absinthe back in the illegal days, unfortunately his girlfriend wanted inspiration one weekend and drank the entire bottle.  They reported no inspirational or especially hallucinatory visions – I believe she drank it straight from the bottle without respite that in my opinion would have brought about a visit from the fairy.

In which Blake prepares for the weekend…

This weekend should be a lot of fun.  CWA in Statesville,NC on Friday and then York,SC on Saturday.  This weekend will be the final appearances of Steve Corino in the Carolinas.  I had the pleasure of meeting Corino in the locker room of Brodie Chase’s WWC in Greenville,SC in early 2006.

I never saw any of Steve’s matches when he was in ECW, and the only time I saw his name was in the “Apter mags” usually accompanied with bloody photos.  I knew that he was the “King of Old School” but that was about it.

I have attended Steve’s seminar and found it very informative.  Something beneficial for anyone involved in professional wrestling.  He is a professional, a gentleman, and a great performer in the ring.  Plus, he actually remembers who I am whenever our paths cross (at least I think he does).  I hate to see that he is retiring, but I wish him the best of luck in the future.

Corino will be featured in both CWA nights this weekend.  Friday night, teaming with Ricky Landell against Team Macktion.  I know this will be a good match, Corino & CW Anderson versus Macktion in UWF.  Kirby and TJ are great opponents for the Extreme Horsemen. Saturday Corino teams with Allison Danger against Ares & Daffney.

Great thing about these two shows are that they are fairly close to the home-base.

Coming up:  UWF on November 30 & December 1, and then I see the year out in Georgia at NWA Anarchy on December 15 and 29.
